Contemplation Bench
His design vision is clearly expressed in a “manifesto” that he himself drafted. The document is a critique of the contemporary design strategy, which is often based on resource overconsumption and waste, and proposes an alternative oriented towards a more holistic and circular approach. The manifesto concludes with a concrete proposal on how a design studio can really make a difference: by adopting a practice that values imperfection through a craftsmanship approach, the use of natural materials and a focus on sensory experience. These principles have given rise to a collection composed of three pieces - a daybed, a table and a bench - that decontextualise precious natural materials, presenting them on an aluminium structure.
The Contemplation bench, exhibited in the Grumello Park, is an integral part of the collection. In this piece, the principle of the frame is used in combination with a slab of schist stone, shaping a seat that can also serve as a small table. The black stone, comes from the Bertrix schist quarry in Belgium and was manually recovered by the designer for this project. Its fascinating layered structure gives it a surprising texture, which slowly reveals itself as you sit down, transforming the object into an invitation to contemplation.

Joris Verstrepen, a Belgian designer born in West-Flanders, is the founder of his eponymous label Verstrepen.studio. He’s part of a rising generation of designers whose creative methods are reshaping the very essence of design practice. Beyond his personal design philosophy, he challenges conventional notions within the field of design.
Verstrepen's ideology is firmly anchored in four fundamental pillars: nature, imperfection, craftsmanship, and the sensory experience. He seeks to delve into various creative realms, including textiles, ceramics, and object design.
In an era where the established linear principles of western culture and economic models are losing relevance, Verstrepen’s work engages with the act and importance of creation. His design journey transcends mere aesthetics, delving into the very essence of our evolving world and the profound transformations taking place within it.
