Bench in oak
BIVAL
2022
This furniture explores the notion of border through both its function and its construction. Positioned between a bench and a valet stand, it deliberately blurs the boundary between two familiar typologies, creating a hybrid object that remains open to interpretation and use.
The design highlights moments of transition and connection. The junctions between the different wooden elements are intentionally revealed rather than concealed, magnifying the borders between parts. For example, the vertical supports holding the hanging cylinder are composed of two distinct elements that ultimately act as one; their meeting point is emphasized, not fused, making the border visible and meaningful.
Beyond its physical construction, BIVAL also embodies a symbolic border: the transition from one day to the next. In its primary function, it assists in preparing for tomorrow—helping organize clothing, objects, and intentions for what is to come. It invites a mindful pause, encouraging better conditions for the day ahead.
By framing everyday gestures within an object of quiet utility, BIVAL reminds us of the importance of beginnings and of crossing small but meaningful thresholds in daily life.
The hanging cylinder allows clothes or towels to be suspended, while the lower shelf accommodates shoes or personal belongings, reinforcing the dialogue between practicality and simplicity.
Originally from southeastern France on the shores of the Mediterranean, Pierre studied product design there, briefly passing through Italy and the Politecnico di Milano.
His path continued in Belgium, in Brussels, where he felt the need to enter the world of joinery and cabinetmaking to better understand the manufacture of the furniture he was already designing at the time.
This was followed by five years' experience in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he deepened his knowledge of woodworking and was exposed to new types of wood and skills that were unknown to him at the time.
Based in Brussels, Pierre Granier offers a collection of furniture that reflects the influences of the various cultures that have been part of his life, and pieces that are both durable and functional, while taking environmental issues into account.
