Fault Lines

The title suggests a metaphorical and physical tension within the work. In geology, fault lines are fractures in the Earth's crust where tectonic plates shift, creating pressure, movement, and transformation. Similarly, within her work there is a visual and conceptual push and pull, between structure and spontaneity, stillness and movement, control and intuition.

Her approach is deeply rooted in instinct. She finds that the best results emerge when she relinquishes rigid control and lets the creative process unfold naturally. While her colour palette is often predetermined due to the time required to source materials, she continually adapts and refines her compositions as she works.

Defined by sharp, angular forms and a restrained palette, her work exudes a quiet intensity. She employs black as an anchor, layering muted tones sparingly to create depth and stillness. The interplay between stark, monumental shapes and the tactility of her medium

encourages sensory engagement, viewers are drawn not only to the visual impact but also to the desire to interact with the work.

Justyna Szymanska is a Polish artist and designer based in London, whose textile works are defined by sharp, angular forms, gestural compositions that arise as rapid digital sketches, capturing the fluid rhythm of the hand.

Drawn to textiles from an early age, she holds a BA from the London College of Fashion, always gravitating towards printmaking and textile exploration over tailoring and garment making. Her approach is deeply intuitive, driven by a desire to translate movement into material form. His palette is restrained and subdued, with colours used sparingly and anchored in black to create a sense of depth and quiet intensity. This restraint allows the viewer to be engaged, offering a moment of stillness amidst the boldness of the forms. The dynamic patterns embody a brutalist, monumental, stark, and architectural sensibility, while the tactile nature of his medium invites a physical connection, satisfying an innate desire to touch. Each piece is entirely unique, meticulously handmade from pure wool and hemp, with every detail sewn and inlaid by hand by the artist.
