MM3 ModularMat 3
2025
A border is not merely a line that divides; it is a threshold: a place of passage where two presences can acknowledge one another without encroaching upon each other.
There are distances that protect, and distances that separate.
MM3 ModularMat 3 was conceived to explore that subtle zone where distance becomes a choice and proximity becomes a gesture.
The project consists of three modules: two lateral areas that define a personal territory and a central element that belongs neither to one nor the other.
It is precisely within this in-between space that the project takes shape: a small, intentional, and recognisable area that makes visible what usually remains implicit in human relationships — the threshold, the measure, the agreement.
The central module is neither a void nor a filler.
It is an active field. A joint.
It can accommodate a support, a passage, a brief pause; it can become the point where gazes meet, where conversation begins, or where presence is simply shared without intrusion.
In this sense, MM3 ModularMat 3 does not merely define a form: it defines a condition.
A design object that operates not only through form, but through relationships — a horizontal micro-architecture that makes the boundary inhabitable.
Materials and construction articulate a deliberately legible contrast: on one side softness and comfort, on the other a precise, almost technical edge that does not enclose but organises.
The boundary is no longer a barrier; it becomes a sign that clarifies, a threshold that allows people to be together more freely.
MM3 ModularMat 3 is conceived for spaces where human relationships are part of the design itself.
Isola was born as a shared space, but even before that as a shared idea: bringing together a group of designers around a common vision of making. Not simply a workplace, nor a collection of skills and tools, but an environment in which different disciplines find points of connection, engage in dialogue, and build new possibilities together. Every project becomes the result of a collective perspective. Graphic design meets architecture, visual thinking enters into dialogue with space, and communication intertwines with materiality. Each member contributes their own experience, sensitivity, and method; yet what emerges never belongs to a single voice. It is the result of cohesion, a shared direction, and a unity of purpose that transforms differences into a creative force.
Isola is a community of perspectives moving in the same direction. A creative organism in which each discipline retains its own identity while contributing to a broader vision.
The designers and architects behind the MM3 project are: Guido Camandona, Alessandra Manzoni, Michela Milani, Giovanni Sacchi and Paolo Vallara.
