Cantiere Ernesto Riva

Central Saint Martins / Volta27 at Cantiere Ernesto Riva.

This exhibition, undertaken by first-year master design students and hosted at the historic Cantiere Ernesto Riva, was developed in collaboration with Volta27: a group of professionals honouring Alessandro Volta’s legacy to shape the future of sustainable navigation on Lake Como.

Anticipating a larger international design challenge in 2026 – 27, the pilot project asked students to respond to the theme of “Energy Poetics”—working carefully with naturally occurring energy sources while using poetics as a disruptive tool for innovation, drawing on the poetry of movement and craft to develop functional objects for the Lake Como area. The Master of Design for Industry (MADI) 5.0 is a course at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, that foregrounds people and the planet to explore the entrepreneurial opportunity presented by the technologies of the fourth industrial revolution.
