Alvaro Molteni. Sketches / Very small-format works that the artist used to call “sketches.”

The exhibition brings together around 50 small- and very small-format works that the artist used to call “sketches.” These are drawings made using various techniques and on different supports, depending on what was available at the moment of inspiration: paper, fragments of wood, or hardboard.

Most are studies for works later developed on a larger scale, spanning a time frame from the 1940s to 2000. Curated under the supervision of critic Luigi Cavadini, the exhibition also reveals Molteni’s working method, firmly built first on drawing, then on the small-format sketch, and finally on the completed work. A small miscellany of sources of inspiration, notes, and photographs helps to assemble—like a puzzle of other fragments—a lightly sketched portrait of Molteni.
