Vacuum Atelier (IT)

Cappella Celesia

Bigfoot

The proposed object focuses attention on how the fragments are connected, emphasising, by contrast, the value of each individual part.

The joint is not just a technical element, but becomes an aesthetic device that influences perception and spatial experience. To observe it is to explore that threshold capable of accommodating imperfection and transforming it into unity. In an era of fragmentation, the joint assumes the role of reconciliation, ‘a conflictual moment that separates and unites elements’ (Bötticher, cit. in Frampton, Studies in Tectonic Culture).

Iron scraps and imperfect stone blocks are recovered and assembled: it is not the material itself that is innovative, but its interconnection. The structure, made of natural iron with visible welding, reinterprets architectural elements such as frames and plinths. The shelves, fixed by cylindrical magnets that also serve as bookends, remain easily removable and flexible. The magnet becomes an abstract, powerful yet ephemeral joint.

At the base, large adjustable feet made of Gré log recall the roots of Italian architecture. Their truncated cone shape recalls memories of ancient plinths and traditional furniture feet. In an unstable society, the foot becomes a metaphor for solidity. The weight bearing down on the ground contrasts with the lightness of the upper part.

The shelving is modular and adaptable, available in four dimensional configurations.

Vacuum Atelier is an architecture studio founded by architects PhD Gino Baldi (Architect - PhD at the Politecnico di Milano) and Serena Comi (Architect) in Bergamo in 2021. For Vacuum Atelier, the project is a continuous negotiation between the various resources that may arise: economic constraints, regulatory constraints, spatial needs, energy requirements, use of materials, and new intended uses are all resources that are part of the project, which in turn dominate or succumb, shifting weights and outcomes. These resources are selected, assembled, and used through an artisanal logic. The studio investigates transversal themes that pass from the scale of landscape and architecture to the design of the object.
