Jonathan Guaitamacchi was born in London in 1961 and graduated from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. His artistic practice has developed across Milan, London, Cape Town and Turin, places that have profoundly influenced his work. From the mid-1990s onwards, he focused on Milan’s urban and industrial landscapes, particularly the Bovisa district and the area around Milan Central Station. These experiences led to the development of his distinctive style: large-scale metropolitan visions in black and white, characterised by a strong compositional rigour and pictorial intensity.
In 1997, he presented the exhibition Le macchine della luce, which marked his public emergence. That same year, he was awarded the Premio Suzzara ex aequo and exhibited at the Rome Quadriennale. In 2005, he participated in the Beijing Biennale. His career includes more than one hundred exhibitions in Italy and abroad, with shows in cities including London, Berlin, New York and Miami, as well as collaborations with major cultural institutions and companies. In recent years, he has expanded his artistic research to glaciers, developing photographic and painting projects presented in exhibitions in Milan, Lugano and Val di Susa.
In 2018, within the framework of the CulturaMeccanica® project, Politecnico di Milano dedicated a retrospective to his work produced between 1997 and 2017. In 2022, he created the permanent artwork EpiGenesi in the spaces of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Bovisa Campus, further confirming his significant role in the artistic representation of the contemporary urban landscape.
His work has received critical attention from prominent figures including Alda Merini, Flaminio Gualdoni, Carlo Bertelli, Francesco Poli, Marco Meneguzzo and Luca Beatrice, as well as from numerous other Italian critics and curators, including Antonello Negri, Beatrice Buscaroli, Olga Gambari, Marco Di Capua and Francesca Brambilla.
