Between Light and Darkness
Our lives are composed of the sum of dualities. Our existence connects these polarities, bringing them into harmony and unity. When we recognize this convergence of opposites, we can experience healing. This theme is explored through contrasting material properties and tactile transformations. Resin, which emerges as balsam to protect trees, possesses healing qualities. This work undergoes a process where fabric is sewn, immersed in resin, and then shaped upon removal. The resin, embodying the concept of healing, becomes central to the transformation where soft fabric becomes a rigid object with contrasting texture. While sewing provides a basic structure, the application of resin and the shaping process also incorporate elements of chance and organic form. Through this process, the artificial and natural harmonize to create a single object. The convergence of opposites occurs throughout from contrasting materials to tactile transformation to the making process itself demonstrating not merely a combination but the concept of “becoming one.” The final form, where resin and fabric merge so that resin appears to exist within fabric and fabric within resin, represents more than a simple fusion of two elements; it symbolizes the nature of our lives.

Yunju Jung is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice arises from a unique background, between early music and product design. This blend has shaped her vision, focused on exploring the dualities of life. Her approach, profoundly dialectical, crosses disciplinary boundaries, uniting diverse perspectives. At the center of her work is the innovative use of resin, a material she employs to transform soft fabrics into solid forms, blending natural and artificial, control and randomness. Her research investigates the hidden unity between opposing forces, revealing their profound harmony.
