Lotus Lamp
Like a living archive where tradition and contemporary design meet, this lamp fuses centuries-old Japanese fan-making techniques with modern lighting design to rediscover and reinterpret cultural fragments, rituals and crafts, creating a poetic convergence of time, place and memory. The wooden base is made by Yamada Wood Workshop in Kyoto, using Hinoki cypress from the forested mountains of Keihoku, Kyoto. The surface is finished with traditional Japanese lacquer (urushi), supplied by the Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi Company, founded in 1909. Their philosophy - “Not a single drop of urushi is wasted” - honours the vision and spirit of its founder, Asakichi Tsutsumi, while retaining a deep respect for natural materials and craftsmanship integrity. But the heart of the lamp is the traditional paper fan, known as uchiwa, which is used as a reflector. Produced in the Hachiya Uchiwa atelier in Kyoto, these fans have been crafted with unchanged techniques for over 400 years, using natural materials such as wood and bamboo, and handmade washi paper.
Combining tradition and innovation, the lamp incorporates the latest high-efficiency LED technology, designed at the New York headquarters, ensuring manageability and versatility, and preserving delicate materials through soft light.
